your telewest box?? u r connecting the xover to ur network card and not ur modem??
i have it connected to the ethernet connection on my dbox to my laptop,there is only one space on my laptop where that size of plug will fit in,so i was guessing it was correct.Not sure about network cards modem etc.

check the ipaddress u have set on the dbox is correct and has saved.....dbox-settings-network

is ur lappy wirelessly connected to internet?
yeah it was till the settings were changed in networkconnections.Settings are saved on dbox.
I think ihave the wrong crossover cable,there are 2 different types.prrobably have to wait till tomorow now till i get to mapling for a cable that only has 2 wires changed not all 4 like my cable.
i ordered this crossover cable of ebay.but by the looks of it i have the gigabyte crossover cable.Could that be the problem.Should it only be 2 pairs crossed over instead of all four?
