    Starview The Box PVR Identification

    Hi,
Bought a box - Silver in colour which has The Box PVR on the top right hand corner

In system information - The Box PVR - Ver 3.100, 29 Jan 2008

    What version is it?

I have been able to manually input codes as per the great advice on this site and got the box to work, but am wondering what to do ie if I update the firmware (when available) will the codes update automatically?

What connections do I need to connect to my laptop, Dell XPS M1330 (doesn't have the connection that most boxes have so can it be done via USB?)

Can I simply add files to memory stick and downloa to the box pvr that way?

Sorry to sound so dumb but have trawled this site a obtained lots of great info but I am not that techy!

    Thanks in advance.

Would anybody know what version it is?

Silly I know but - What version is it?
      The Box PVR, 1,2,3
Bought it second hand and all that was said was Starview the box pvr.

Will this make a difference with firmware downloads?

      Thanks in advance...

You have the older dual tuner PVR with a later Beta release.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer. - Douglas Adams

          Hi,

I have the same unit, what you have is just the PVR, not a 1, 2, 3 or 4.
The 1 is the very original, the 2 was the updated version, 3 was called the super and 4 is the new usb one, yours and mine are simply TheBox (Starview) PVR.
The firmware you are using is the beta that was released with many problems but was released mainly in an attempt to sort the 'blank recordings' problem but had many issues for example when viewing on epg (Picture in graphic) when you scroll through the channels the channel actually changes with it rather than just being able to view the next page of channels for what is on next.
You can update it with your laptop, on the PVR as long as you have a usb connection you can update through that, just copy the firmware onto the internal hard drive via usb then go into hard drive options and select 'Update firmware from HDD'
All we need now is a new firmware for it ;-)
          Hope this helps,
          Paul.

              Firmware update...

              Thanks to all,

Is this firmware update normally later than others as it is the oldest model?

              cheers

                Hi Mate,

I have been waiting for new firmware since oct 2007, the beta that was released this year was a starting point for a new firmware and was released to get peoples opinions, that's where it ended, nothing since.
To be honest I am at the point of giving up and am currently hunting the net to find the best price on a HD box I have been looking at for a while, needless to say I wont be buying anything 'Starview again' currently I am stuck with a Starview 2 and a PVR which it seems are no longer deemed worth sorting, I hope I am wrong and they do get sorted but regardless of this latest problem I have been making do with a dodgy PVR unit that records when it chooses for too long now with a promise of things being sorted.

Not what you wanted to hear I know but over a year now and nothing new.
Just have to sit and wait I guess.

                All the best,
                Paul.

                  New Firmware......Someone must know

                  Oh Dear!!

Surely on this wonderful sight full of very helpful intelligent people....there must be a solution?

I am new to this sort of thing and have obviously been duped into buying this "Box" without doing the DD!! My own fault...

But I can't believe that there isn't a cure for this box!

come on wonderful people help us out.....doesn't any other firmware work, I'll give anything a try. How often do the providers do a roll?

                  cheers
                  Dave

                      Hi Dadof2littlemonsters,

It has annoyed me most because I bought my PVR knowing it had recording faults but on one forum someone stating to be working with the firmware writers said they were sorting it in the next firmware release.....this was a year ago.
Right now my mouse keeps hovering over the 'confirm order' button on a CubeRevo twin tuner PVR HD for ?433.00 delivered, but being a tight ass I will be spending the next few hours trying to hunt down a beter price before clicking on it.
Then I have to do the inevitable, tell the missus what I have just bought and the keep out of her way for a while LOL.

                      All the best,
                      Paul.

P.S Wolves4eva, unfortunately you can only use te specific firmware written for the PVR, anything else wont work

Will be massively disappointed if this Starview PVR is not updated. If this how they treat their customers can't imahgine anyone purchasing another Starview product.

Fingers crossed the team doing the updates will get round to the PVR eventually.

So had the box for a day and its down!!!
Will it have any resale value or is it scrap?

What is the next option you mention cuberevo, are there others and will there be programming and updates for these.....or is it all coming crashing down!

                              Hi Wolves4eva,

You still have a perfectly usable box mate so you are okay.
The new firmware we are waiting for is only needed for the auto update feature which saves you having to manually enter any codes.
You can manually enter the latest code into the box and it will work perfectly (codes haven't changed since 30th so not too bad)

Download 'keymaker v1.2' from this site, then get the key you need according to your provider.
On your box press Menu, then go to system setup, then go into parental control, when the x's are showing to enter your password, press the 'i' button the type in '2 0 0 7'
This will take you to a menu, go to 'Nagravision' and press ok, then in there select your provider and enter the correct keys making sure to press okay after each key so it saves.
Once done, press exit once which takes you back to secret menu, go down to auto update and select No.
Then press exit again and again until you are back to tv screen , you should now have all channels.
Just do this whenever your channels stop working and your box is perfectly useable.

If I was you though I would update (back date) your firmware to the oct 2007 one as this was a much better firmware to use and in my opinion is the only firmware that makes this box bearable.

I ended up pressing the button last night and bought an IP9000HD box which is linux based (the same as the CubeRevo I mentioned but with in my opinion a nicer look to it) the beauty of Linux boxes is that they do not need the actual maker to provide a frmware update, so no more being left stranded like we have with the PVR unit.
I have just spent ?500 on this box purely because I like my toys and have been saving for a long time for a good one, but you can get linux boxes for less than ?200 according to what spec you require.

                              Hope this helps,
                              Paul.
