my diesel is year 2000 is that too late ?I dont use the red stuff, thats asking for trouble - but pretty much anything else. Older diesel engines are far more tolerant to alternative fuels, newer engines wont run on it. But i have used mixtures including veg oil, waste veg oil, heating oil, hydraulic oil, rape seed oil, paraffin - anything i can get hold of cheap.

depends what car it is,its all to do with your diesel pump(someone will put me right)certain pumps are better than others for processing crap oils than others.my 98 peugeot 306 will run on anything that it can burn.and as for chipshops being free-the ones round here sell their oil now to a refining company down the road that also refines rapeseed oil.the last time i bought from them it was around a pound a litre and that was about 6 maybe 8 months ago.Comment

Why do you think the price of petrol is so low in the US?
Because everytime they put a cent on a gallon half the population go mental ... Every US government recognises the power of the electorate on this issue and it matters not whether the incumbent party is democrat or republican ... Fuel prices remain low.
We get shafted in this country on all manner of issues because everyone has your attitude ... There's nothing we can do about it so we won't bother.Comment

Tax is the main reason fuel is the price it is , not the price of a barrel of crude ! , 90p per litre tax , the rest on exploration , extraction , production , refining and distribution and of course still a bloody huge profit .
Why the hell have folk accepted ?1.34 per litre (diesel) , without even a whimper , when we had refinery embargos and civil disorder as it nudged ?1 per litre , have we all given up!
I'm now on a 3 day week which saves me 2 days fuel a week and i've started car sharing, weeks about , which is just as well as i'm skint and dreading the gas and elecy bills which i've worked out for this Icelandic quarter to be over ?550 ! , which is bloody crazy for 3 people living in a modest (well insulated) 3 bed bungalow .
Makes you want to stick 2 fingers up to the lot and stay in bed !

As much as the price is to ~~~~ing high due to excess tax. I have a solution that would see the price go higher... by about 26p per litre.
Incorporate road tax into the cost of the petrol.
You would still need to buy a tax disk, but only for about ?10.
Then working on an average of 10,000 miles per year at 40mpg with tax a standard ?300 per year. It would add 26p per litre to fuel prices.
If you drive an economical car you could see a saving, maybe. Mid range cars should balance out, but gas guzzlers (like mine) and/or high milage people would be hurt.
Transport companies could apply for licences to use red diesel, as could bus companies that run national routes. Local services could apply for tax deductions based on performance.
Foreign companies/drivers will have to pay full price.
It may not be popular with some, but it's a lot fairer than the current system.Canker
