Back on track. Why are funds being used on NVQ qualifications for non-jobs like this?Leanne passed her NVQ Level 1 in beauty ***8211; making her qualified for pedicures and manicures.
And she was heading for top marks on Level 2 when the course was shelved without warning.
It would make more sense to train in the basic skills that schools can't be arsed to teach anymore.Last edited by nara; 18 November, 2011, 10:36.He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.

thats actually quite a silly comment, although its something thats never interested me, if you look at the statistics, beauty and hairdressing is one of the most profitable businesses right now.
Maybe profitable isnt my right choice of word, its still early, it will come to me

That may well be true, but there are more training places than jobs available.
"Beauty Therapy" is seen as an easy option for a training course.
I can't find any figures for the UK, but in the USA, although the overall unemployment rate for "manicure and pedicure" is low at about 2.6%; of those that are employed over 25% are classed as under-employed or part-time.He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.

but most of those who start off as trainees in salons themselves whilst going through college end up opening salons themselves, thus opening more jobs up.
Im always seeing jobs advertised, or chairs available to rent in shop fronts, and lets face it, with people at risk of losing their job every day, women are getting their hair and nails done now more than ever to make themself as presentable as possible in order to keep a job or to get a job, so i'm guessing there is more demand for these jobs opening up. And a barely minimum pay or part time job is better than no job.

I was a self employed locksmith and lost count how much work I picked up playing Golf or talking to people in the Gym. Infact you'd be surprised how much business is done outside of work. These are the areas that the young and unemployed need to target if they want to get noticed.
so hanging round the local park drinking white lightening is a defo non starter then???Comment

Not jumping to Snowy's defence, but I have picked up more jobs outside of work than when I'm sat bored in work.
I don't think there's an easy answer to finding a job. I used to work in sales & know you have to sell yourself to stand a chance of landing a job. My CV was set out with this in mind, but it got mixed responses.
In one interview the guy loved my CV as it jumped out & grabbed your attention. Yet at another interview I was told they didn't like the style on my CV as it shouted 'look at me'.... I always thought that is what a CV is for???
This is the problem with large companies. It's not the boss that employs people. it's jumped up hitlers who don't know the first thing about the job applied for that are making the first round of decisions. These are the people who are more interested in what's happening in big brother & x factor than if a person is qualified to do a job.Canker

Golf was just an example and if you're lucky it's not that expensive. The first few games I played were invites. My mates Dad owns a Tyle Company and every year they have a works Golf Day. It's not just jobs you could pick up, during the round and drinks afterwards I networked and got over ?2000 worth of tyles for ?600. Someone to lay them on the cheap and picked up a few lock jobs. Admitedly if you join a club and buy all the gear it's expensive and if you turn up to play with just your mate you're not going to do much networking. Pop into the clubhouse and check out when there's competitions on and just hang around in the bar afterwards. You'd be surprised how many big bosses play golf.
Get out and mix with where potential employees hang around. I'm now in a Hill Walking Club and in the last year I've witnessed about a dozen people get jobs just by chatting to some of the people on the hill. If a potential boss gets to know you outside of a letter or 10 minute interview it could work for you. I do know that sitting at home wont get you noticed though. This is the difference between those that make it and those that look to blame others for their failings.
