It's a bit like comparing great footballers of their era with those of today. You can't do that. Finney ,Mathews, Pele, Maradonna, Best, Charlton, Dalglish etc compare those with Todays superstars you can't because they never played in the same era. You frown upon the old format but if it was that easy to win 5,4,3,2 times how come your lot didn't do it ? Simply answer is, you were never good enough to win the English league, so therefore never qualified for the European cup.
probably would have done a few more to be fair bulldog league champions twice in a row with a team average aged 22 i would have thought we'd have done pretty ok if it wasnt for munich

i dont frown upon older era's im just stating that to win the CL competition is harder than it was when you only played a couple of decent sides at most to win it

we have won the league 11 times though since it was re-formed so we would have had 11 more chances to win it than you if it had stayed in the same format of being winners only

11 chances against only a couple of decent teams its nearly a 50-50 chance of winning everytime your in it

Well i think we should agree to disagree. The fact is only Champions were allowed to play in the European cup and regardless of the names of the teams and the countries they came from there was some really good teams. Liverpool of the 70's and 80's dominated Europe we had the best team around.
If football was shite in that era we would have won it every year. Forest at the time and Villa had great sides. Not mediocre teams who were lucky to play in Europe.

Look at some of these average teams that were around at the time.Real Madrid had the likes of Puskas Gento and di stefano Bayern had beckenbaur breitner Muller and Hoeness. Ajax had Cruyff and Neeskens. Juventus had Boniek Platini Tardelli and Rossi. AC Milan had Gullit Van Basten Riijkard . Forest had Shilton Francis Birtles and Robertson. Thats without even mentioning the teams we had, The team of 78 probably would have won the world cup they were that good.
Look at some of the quality players there, and tell me again it was easy to win. Everyone of them had won their respective leagues to enter the competition.

          THE TRUTH
          The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

Much as I hate to side with pool fans, everytime I see the words champions league it makes me feel nauseous.......hello, champions???? In the old days you had to win your league first, now its a purely about self preservation and money gathering. Can't play teams from your own league? Seedings? Makes a mockery of the concept and also ensures the rich stay rich.......it's not about football anymore, it's about who spends their money best. yawn

not saying all teams were crap im just saying most were until about the semi finals

in the late 70's for instance i think it would have been far harder to win if for instance say forest, villa and even ipswich at the time were in it as well as the top few sides in italy and spain as oppose to the poor quality servings in the early rounds

in reply to calvin the plummer i think teams were seeded anyway cos the bigger teams didnt meet in early rounds which is the same in most sports but i take your point its just a better version of the uefa cup and EC combined as opposed to a Champions league

1978/79.. did you win the league..?? No.. but you still qualified for the European Cup...

Fast forward 26 years... were you one of the ones saying Liverpool shouldn't be allowed to defend their trophy as they failed to finish in the Top 4

You're right, having to defeat liverpool (aside from forest in my opinion the greatest english club side of my lifetime, though the team that spanked us 5-0 a decade later comes a close second) in the second round was a real easy tie

with regard to did I want you to qualify after istanbul? I sure did, not because I like your club but because it was the right thing to happen. Far more so than teams that finish second, third or fourth.....I believe it was the blue half of your town I'd of told to jog on. The fact the rules assumed that only a team who was top 4 next season could win it is a reflection of the closed club the champions league is and the weakening of domestic leagues with all the money that goes with it.

I do banter too much for my own good, and it is meant in jest, though I won't back track on my stevie g opinions. Forest fans of my generation were raised to hate your club, it runs deep and yup most of that is because you were just that little bit better :-(
