GENEROUS former Liverpool FC manager Rafa Benitez made a ?substantial? cash donation to the Rhys Jones Memorial Fund yesterday.

He arranged for one of his old coaching staff at Anfield to hand-deliver a cheque to Rhys? mother Melanie at the West Derby Tesco where she works.

Benitez said: ?I am doing this on behalf of the people that cannot.

?I know that every person on Merseyside would have loved to give the Fund a donation but they are in hard times and can't find the extra cash.?

Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier claims that Liverpool have made an approach for the French side's coach Didier Deschamps. However, Dassier told Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow that there is "no hope in hell" of persuading the 41-year-old, who guided his beloved Marseille to their first league title in 18 years last season, to move to Anfield. Rafa hits out at Purslow

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has hit out at managing director Christian Purslow for the handling of his departure.

The Spanish tactician ended his six-year Anfield reign by mutual consent after failing to lead his side to qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League.
He has since become manager of Serie A champions Inter Milan following the departure of Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid.
The 50-year-old admits it was tough to leave the Merseyside club, but has hit out at Purslow,who arrived at Liverpool last June, for prompting his exit.

"It was really sad," he told Radio City.

"I was on holiday so it was a surprise that everything was going on in this way, but at the end of the day it has to be like this because Christian Purslow is now in charge and he decided to do it in this way. That is it.

"It is really sad but you have to move forwards. I said to my family that we cannot stay talking too much or complain too much, we have to move forwards.

"The people of Liverpool are fighters and I was fighting from the beginning until the end. Now I have to do the same and I have to be thinking about the future.

"I was really pleased here, the fans were amazing, but I can't stand around complaining. I have to move forward and do my best for my new club."

Liverpool are still on the lookout for a new manager, although there is still uncertainty behind the scenes at Anfield.
