      Reds planning Hillsborough scarf tribute

Liverpool are asking sports fans across the world to donate a scarf as part of a plan to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Former Reds player and manager Kenny Dalglish has written to every club in the Premier and Football League asking them to help.

Dalglish, now a director at Anfield, is asking each of the other 91 league clubs, in addition to the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish Football Associations, to donate a scarf in memory of the 96 victims of the 1989 tragedy.

Liverpool want supporters from around the world to send in any type of club scarf, regardless of sport, as a mark of support for the families of the victims.

Each scarf received will be laid out in the shape of the number 96 on the Anfield pitch for the Hillsborough Memorial Service, which will take place there on Apr. 15.

The victims of the disaster were crushed to death on an over-crowded section of terracing when they attended Liverpool’s FA Cup semifinal against Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium on Apr. 15, 1989.

Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, which is campaigning for justice on behalf of the victims and their families, said: “The annual Memorial Service in memory of the 96 is always a moving occasion for the families and survivors.

“We already receive so much support from people worldwide, but if we could create what would be a fantastic symbol of unity on the pitch from donated scarves from across the world, this would be a truly moving way of bringing the world together for the 25th Anniversary of Hillsborough.”

After the service, all scarves received will be donated by the Liverpool FC Foundation -- the club’s official charity -- to local good causes, including homeless charities.
Dalglish, who was Liverpool’s manager at the time of the disaster and gave great personal support to the families of the victims in its aftermath, will also take charge of a team of former Reds players in a charity match to mark the 25th anniversary of Hillsborough.

That match -- against another team of ex-Liverpool stars managed by Gerard Houllier -- will take place at Anfield on Easter Monday, Apr. 21.

The club are asking all donated scarves to be sent to: Hillsborough Scarves, 20 Chapel Street, Liverpool L3 9AG. Scarves should arrive by Tuesday, Apr. 8 to be guaranteed that they are included in the pitch display during the memorial service.

Brendan Rodgers bringing glory days back to Liverpool

STEVEN GERRARD could have been sprawled out on a sun lounger in Portugal, but instead interrupted his holiday to hear Brendan Rodgers lay down his vision for Liverpool.

        Tue, March 18, 2014

Brendan Rodgers has transformed Liverpool into genuine title contenders this season [GETTY]
The grand plan was spelt out in detail, just as it had been to owner John W Henry in a 180-page dossier at an interview to succeed Kenny Dalglish, and in the months since that meeting in the summer of 2012 there has been little deviation from the design.

Rodgers has proved as true to his word as he has been to his philosophy.
"I would never judge a player or a manager or a member of the coaching staff before I have actually met them face-to-face and seen them every day," said Gerrard, who was informed during the talks how he would be eased into the controlling midfield role he is currently performing with such aplomb.
"And I have been absolutely blown away by his training sessions, his tactics and his maturity in the job. I'm learning off him every single day. He has been a revelation.
"He is a young coach who has been there and earned the right to be Liverpool manager. From week to week, he is helping us improve and get better and he has been an absolute breath of fresh air to this football club.
"We have had our difficult times and, at the moment, we need to enjoy the way we are playing and try and continue it and get success. That is how we will eventually be judged."
The starting point was improving Liverpool's home form and controlling possession and, therefore, games, but what is impressive is how Rodgers is now propelling the club towards the finishing line this term.
Rodgers' use of Suarez this season has shown how tactically astute he is [GETTY]
He makes you go out on the pitch feeling a million dollars with confidence and belief
        Steven Gerrard
This is a team constantly evolving in its search of perfection. Rodgers deployed a 3-5-2 formation shortly after Luis Suarez's return from suspension in September in order to allow him to partner Daniel Sturridge, before switching to a 4-3-3 system that asked the Uruguayan to sacrifice himself for the team by playing in a wider position.
It resulted in the 5-1 dismantling of Arsenal last month and, for most clubs, would have set a formula in stone.
Yet against Manchester United on Sunday, as he had in the 3-0 win over Southampton in the previous game, Rodgers used a diamond formation to seize control of the midfield and also pair Suarez and Sturridge once again.
What this reveals is a manager who is not only tactically savvy, but someone in whom his players, with all their foibles and egos, have complete trust. Contrast that particular point with United.
"He keeps tweaking and tinkering with the formation and making little subtle changes to personnel and tactics and it is coming off from week to week," said Gerrard. "He is driving the club forward. He manages every single player differently. He knows we have different characters in the dressing room and his one-on-one management is the best I have known.
"He makes you go out on the pitch feeling a million dollars with confidence and belief. He is a very confident manager.
"When you play for Liverpool you have to accept pressure, you have to take it on the chin and perform. But when you have a manager who is making you feel good, but who is also not scared to give you a good one-on-one telling off as well, then he has the perfect ingredients."
Kop captain Gerrard reckons Rodgers has revitalised the club [GETTY]
If the main reason Liverpool cannot end their 24-year wait for the title is due to their defensive frailties, then Chelsea and Manchester City will have noticed the successive clean sheets at St Mary's and Old Trafford where many expected the visitors to trip up.
Liverpool put their bodies on the line against United, epitomised by Jon Flanagan and Martin Skrtel, while Daniel Agger has returned to the starting line-up seemingly intent on showing he should have a future at Anfield. The collective spirit is shining through.
"You can only get that togetherness and spirit when you do the dirty work and go the extra mile," added Gerrard. "That is what these players are doing for each other right now.
"As a team we have to keep making statements. A lot of the so-called experts out there questioned us before this game, saying, 'Are we capable of coming to Manchester United and beating a good team?'
"We have passed the test and answered the question with flying colours. Not just that, but we are going away slightly disappointed that this wasn't a five or six-goal thrashing here because the way we performed from start to finish, everybody in the team contributing, was magnificent."
Once again, it was just how Rodgers planned it.

Loath them or Loath them they never fail to plumb the depths do they

Denials that followed Sunday's singing about the Sheffield tragedy are bizarre, writes Oliver Holt PLUS:

Sad song: What was United fans' chant about if it was not about Hillsborough?
The chant that came from the Manchester United supporters in the K Stand at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon went like this: “The Sun was right, you’re murderers.”

It was aimed at the Liverpool fans sitting away to their left, but what I found most sinister about it were the denials that followed.

It wasn’t about Hillsborough. Oh, no. How could anyone think that? Just the press chasing an agenda again.

                          Not about Hillsborough? Really?

Why mention The Sun then, with the inevitable connection to be drawn about its front page headline after the Sheffield tragedy?

That’s what I find so bizarre: people sing these songs and then become unfeasibly angry when someone mentions it.

Are they ashamed? Are they playing some sort of sick game that allows them to accuse others of making it up?

You know what the truth is? The truth is that people who sing that song and then deny its meaning are not just idiots, they are dishonest idiots.

Manchester United fans taunting Liverpool rivals with Hillsborough chant aren't just idiots, they're dishonest idiots - Oliver Holt Column - Oliver Holt - Mirror Online
