There were just bad builders and designers, didn't manage to get it straight so made up that excuse. Put it this way, if the earth was round, and you started to drive to London from t'north you'd be able to switch your engine off 'cos you'd be going downhill and so cruise for free, of course you'd use more fuel coming back up again. So if you can't do that with your car, then that's even more proof the world is flat.
