With the orange SIM inserted the phone should activate. But you still won't be able to make any calls as it will be blacklisted.

Apple cannot remove the blacklisting, only orange can do this. The network, or the previous owner, are the rightful owners of the phone. It doesn't matter that the police gave it back to you, they won't remove the block.

You need to jailbreak it before you can unlock it. During the jailbreak you are given check boxes, you will need to make sure 'install Cydia & Ipad baseband' are selected. Activate multi-tasking may also be useful.

Make sure you have the Orange SIM inserted during the jailbreak.

Once jailbroke it can be unlocked.

Do not use the Hacktivate SIM during the jailbreak.

The main bug is with power drain. But this is only a problem if you use a hacktivate SIM instead of the original network SIM to activate the handset.

As far as stability goes, I can't answer as I don't use Iphones, just repair them. But I've unlocked a few of these & I've not had anyone return with problems.

Taken this is the only way you will be able to use it as a phone, what choice do you have?

As it stands it can still be used as an Ipod touch.

This is sort of not true, its called adverse posession and in the eyes of the law the property is now his and nobody can lay claim to it. Regardless of what Orange or the original purchaser say.

Posession is nine tenths of the law.

If there was an insurance claim to replace the handset, then it belongs to the insurance company.

The police should of checked with Orange. Instructions would of been given to return it to the depot in Banbury or the nearest store. The customer would then be informed of it's location or advised to make contact for arranging delivery.

To answer your next question.... The customers account could be located via the SIM or IMEI number.

It doesn't matter to the networks what you tell them. If you're not the account holder the phones linked to, they won't remove it from the blacklist. The same goes if there's been a replacement sent out.

The only hope would be if you speak to someone who doesn't know how to check the details on accounts correctly.

The red dot is when you have voicemails.
"am i right in saying you can only jailbreak to the ipad firmware ??? with this phone ???"
The ipad baseband has nothing to do with the jailbreak ,it's just for unlock the phone. You can just jailbreak by selecting just - install cydia.(the phone will be hacktivated also).

Why would a lost iphone with an orange sim card installed on that baseband (not unlocked) be an O2 phone? Do you have model numbers for orange versions, because I cant find any? I would appreciate your information if you have all uk carrier model numbers.

By updating the baseband to ipad version (6.15, bad advice without the op aware of the consequences) yes the phone has the potential to be unlocked, but the op will not realise any carrier because the phone COULD be uk blacklisted. I would not personally recommend an update to 6.15 unless the op wanted to sell the phone abroad.

My advice, wait for the new orange sim card to be delivered and try getting a signal with this and other ?1 sim cards to make sure which carrier you are on.

So its not imei blocked and is locked to orange. Now you could either live with an orange phone or unlock to any network with the ipad (6.15) baseband. Bear in mind it CAN take up to three months from the phone being reported missing to actually being blacklisted.
