As a lot of members have pointed out, its really down to the end user and how careful they are, you would be suprised at just how much a AV can miss.
A use MSE and Malwarebytes but on the missus laptop a felt safer with Avast and Malwarebytes..
On ma old clunker spare pc a have been using Comodo's 2012 package that comes with their firewall, a would say Comodo is the best free AV for XP users as XP's firewall is limited..
A was a big fan of MSE until recently, it needs a serious engine update for its scanner as wind erosion is faster than its full scan.
A also had customers who requested that i install MSE (business laptops etc) and a few have came back crippled with Malware.
MSE has good detection but its removal after infection is pretty lame, kinda reminds me of Defender in that sense.
A don't think MSE is good enough for your average Windoze user but its better than nothing a suppose.
A would say that Avast and Malwarebytes is as good as a free setup as your gonna get and most on DK find it a pretty solid setup..

I'm running 3 old Dells so always stuggle with anti virus slowing the system, I've tried most options with some success and some a nightmares, I'm not going to slag any individual one but I have setted on Malawarebytes Pro.
I've ran Malawarebytes for over a year on XP and 7 and had no issues with attacks, I run scheduled scans and run an odd manual scan with superantispyware free.
I have very little computer resource use and I have a good clean computers.Comment

i think bullguard is best anti virus i paid ?30 for 2 years plus i can use on 6 computers i also get a online storage space
i think you can get a cheap one year deal but i wouldnt like to guess how muchComment

A would be careful there mate as Malwarebytes is a good security tool to have alongside a AV but a wouldn't trust it as my primary security.
A like Malwarebytes but its more geared up for removal rather than defence and it will miss a lot of different threats..

I run Avast ( Free one ) and Superantispyware, they both do a good job for me, but of late Avast downloaded Google Chrome on an update. of which I don't want it. Had to do a system restore to remove it. Now every time I log on to the internet, Avast pops up with download Google chrome, which I have to untick 2 small boxes to stop it. Anyone else had this problem?Comment

Dont use heavy antivirus program like Norton (It's very heavy on the cpu).
Use a lightweight AV along with MalwareBytes. Trust me what MOST OF AVs do not find Malware will.Comment

I never really get virrii, but I do use Microsoft Security Essentials and do a scan every day.
I use CCleaner to wipe free space, clear network passwords, form submissions, auto fills, history, and of course cookies.
It also allows you to install-uninstall programs and chage your MSconfig etc.
Its a great wee freebee program and it fairly speeds ya PC up once you use it correctly. It allows you to encrypt your deleted files with different encryption options as well.
MSE and CCleaner have worked great for me and are always hassle free.Comment
