hi gus i use avg pro at the moment, full version, but it seem to slow my system down

is there another antivirus thats as good as avg but doesnt require as much resources?

Paid I would say Nod32, for a free one I would say ms security essentials.

I am a bit useless when it comes to computers so I thought I better get some experts advice. I downloaded avast AV free edition on my pc last night and since my pc has slown down quite a lot. Is that a common thing with avast or is there anything else that needs going with it??
I was using Norton b4 but that ran out so I opted for freebe this time.
Any help very much apreciated

Avast is very popular but a don't agree with most views that its light, a think it needs a bit of a overhaul tbh!
It should be lighter than Norton but a have heard Norton is much lighter these days, older versions of Norton were just painful to use and bugged the living hell out of you.
Microsoft Security Essentials is light but a don't think a would trust it as my only defence, a would add Malwarebytes to run alongside MSE.

I have used this setup many times for my customers and it seems to work well on detection and performance.

Correct,people think their systems are totally protected and at the end of the day they are not.Why people say this is the best and that is not,amuse's me..

Most antivirus programs are nothing but annoying...And when the pop-up comes,do you really know what you are deleting??

You can "never" fully protect "any" OS from virus threat but you can reduce the chances of getting one, your average Windows user has much less chance being infected with a up to date AV installed, without one their shiny new pc would be humped within a week.

It might amuse you that people rate AV's but they do differ very much in many different ways, getting solid advice from people who review them who don't accept royalties or are unbiased is a smart move and could save you a lot of time and money.

Most users don't have a clue how to manually remove a virus so its obvious they don't usually understand what the pop up says.
If the threat is gone and the pc still works then they carry on, if they didn't have a AV installed they would be driving to their local pc repair shop and facing a hefty bill that could have been avoided.

A do get at what you mean about them being annoying, sometimes it feels like the Anti Virus Mafia which is why i was happy when MS finally offered their users some sort of basic protection that didn't involve registration and wasn't pop up overdrive constantly asking to upgrade to the pro version, its a bit like saying that your current protection isn't good enough so upgrade.
My main gripe is big red flashy pop ups warning you about cookies (Super Anti Spyware anyone) i have had so many customers download these stupid programs usually by mistake and then they phone me up thinking their pc is humped, a "hate" programs like that.
A pop up should only appear when something is wrong, otherwise it should run in the background and never bother you.

So a agree that Anti Virus programs can be a pain but there will be a lot more pain for your average user without one....

If you have only just delete Norton .....There is most likely your problem, You have to run an uninstall program you download from nortons website to completely remove the program

program artifice will slow the PC down, Its a dirty trick to try and get you to reinstall nortons

You can run Malwarebytes alongside Avast, its a well tested and solid setup to go for mate.

Kapersky internet security 2013 is pretty good now dosent slow much down anymore
and u can get this free when u sign upto barclays internet banking
have had kapersky 3 years running and never had any problems

I would recommend comodo internet security premium (firewall + av) and alongside it run iobit and mse, and run a check monthly using norman antimalware cleaner. also use ccleaner and defraggler too

Do you not think that is a wee bit heavy pal, to run Comodo and MSE next to each other isn't ideal as you have 2 signature data bases from each program and could cause conflicts.
On top of that you are also running 10bit's security program, i am guessing that you are referring to 10 bit anti malware program.

10 bit anti malware program is clouded in suspicion and its origin is China, now a know there are a lot of genuine programs from China but 10 bit anti malware has been questioned.
It started life as 10 bit 360 and took the market by suprise, it had a brilliant fast scanning engine and seemed to be very accurate with low false positives, too accurate for a new boy and it drew attention from Malwarebytes.
They looked at 10 bits signature database and found many had identical descriptions of types of Malware that Malwarebytes had found previously, they set a trap in a new signature that was harmless and not made available to any other companies and it flagged a certain message up to prove that the code was stolen.
No other companies detected the signature except,, you guessed it, 10 bit 360 and the hidden message appeared which said "stop stealing our software", so it was clear that 10 bit were stealing Malwarebytes signatures.

10 bit strongly denied the claims yet failed to provide any proof to defend themselves.
360's popularity dropped as a result and their development team split up, one half went on to develop 10 bits new anti malware program and the other half setup Anvi Smart Defender.
360's reputation was damaged so bad that it was killed and rebranded 10bit Malware Defender which isn't half as good as 360 was.
Anvi Smart Defender didn't fair any better with awful detection and removal..
360 however made a comeback as a clone and renamed Advanced Spyware Remover, its also pretty terrible..

I actually tested Anvi Smart Defender for a few months and apart from it being terrible in detection and false positives, there was also confusion at their origin.
At first it was California then Canada and now China, they went to great effort to conceal their origin.
I emailed them asking if they were linked to 10bit, they said no and even went as far as to say that 10 bit were a malicious company.
Then i saw on their own forum a thread where they admit they were former programers for 10 bit 360.

They also have teams who post reviews on Freeware sites, those reviews are never negative with sometimes broken English..
I posted a review on Cnet that wasn't that bad, one day later there were 6 reviews countering everything i said.
They totally miss the point that new programs take time to develop and the public accept that its in development, this means low detection and false positives are gonna happen and people will forgive this..
Anvi Smart Defender was 5 mins in beta before a RC was introduced, it was the fastest developed beta in history..

A would honestly say avoid 10 bit security programs for now, i went as far to remove all 10bit software from my pc but its your choice..

I used zone alarm and nod32 years ago and is good but you need to pay for nod32 now really...also used kaspersky but keys became a nightmare to get a hold of so i now use Comodo premium suite free and its fantastic!
