The end of the cardsharing era

So I was talking to a friend the other day, and he was explaining to me that the CCcam (cardsharing) era is coming to an end. This is actually really bothering me because I've just purchased a VU+ Uno receiver and a CCcam subscription.

What do you guys think? Could he be right?

I forgot to mention that this friend is in the 'satellite business' for quite a long time. That's why it's bothering me and why I'm afraid he could be right.

It's obviously bound to end eventually.

Yes, as is the world coming to an end. Its anyones guess when though.

Ask your friend specifically when, and why its coming to an end.

If he just taps his nose then poke him in the eye, and never listen to a word he says ever again.

I was in the satellite business for quite some time, and I dont even know how to do cs, so the two are not hand in hand with each other.

It really depends on what you mean by cardsharing !

If you mean small private shares running 15-20 clients then yes, that will likely come to an end fairly soon. If, on the other hand your asking about the large cardshare outfits then no, its unlikely to end in the next 5 years.

The reason is simple. Cards need to be able to operate in todays multi-tuner box environment. That means a card must be able to handle at least three seperate streams at the same time which means there is always potential to share. The smaller single card sharing systems are unlikely to be economical because the cards will be limited in the clients they can support - not many people are going to bother if their card will only support 1 extra client.

The bigger systems work differently so although it will be more expensive to operate such a system its still more than possible. Instead of one card per transponder (8-10 channels) you may require 3 cards per transponder.

This situation cannot really change until the set-top boxes are themselves made secure. That would require every one of the presently insecure set top boxes to be swapped out for newer models - something thats very unlikely in any timescale less than 5 years, especially as the newer boxes going out at the moment are themselves insecure.

nb, in theory it could be possible to fundamentally change the way cs works for private groups such that everybody in the group continuously serves at least one (different) channel from a card. A group on 40-50 persons would then get 40-50 channels etc. This would actually be true cardsharing rather than the present share/leach arrangement. Unfortunately, of course, the providers tend to 'bundle' their products into packages rather than allow people to purchase just one channel which means the system would have much duplication of subscription, so not cheap to the end members.

                            Not really !

They've certainly made an attack but the information on how to counter that attack is available within the unprotected stb. Its really just a matter of going through the code in the boxes and sussing whats happening.

For any system based on cardsharing its always the CAM within the stb that your interested in, not the actual card or its encryption. That cam code is rarely protected.
