    triax dish should be fine

get a darkmotor for it too

as for lnb, quattro is the one you DONT WANT,

you need a quad lnb, not a quattro, a quad has four outputs that all give ALL of the 4 states of an lnb, a quattro has four outputs and each one gives a separate state for each of the 4 states of an lnb, so a quattro is used on flats or hotels where you need 4 different outputs to achieve the install, connected to specialised combining boxes

so dish , darkmotor, inverto ultrablack QUAD lnb

Brilliant. Thanks for clearing that up! That's exactly what I have added to my shopping cart - Triax TD78 dish, Dark Motor, Ultra Black LNB and just the box to get now.

I'm probably just going to go with the one twin tuner box so think I'll get the cheaper single tuner first just to get everything set up then get a twin tuner later. The Alien 2 twin tuner looks really good value.

Thanks for your superb help ramjet. I'll let you know how everything goes.

Where does one obtain a list of what channels are available on what dishes? Actually really looking forward to playing around with it now. I've opted for a Skybox F5 which is just new out I believe. I know it is a very basic setup but this will most definitely be a secondary box. My primary box which I will get within the next few weeks will possibly be a Vu Duo or perhaps the Amiko Alien 2 which seems unbelievable value for a twin tuner for around ?150. This comes with both Spark and Enigma 2 images; of which I know very little about to be honest!

clone boxes or copies of other products are always cheaper, but its your money

try lyngsat.com or kingofsat.net or flysat for channel for broadcaster details, transponders , satellites etc

but bear in mind there are thousands of channels from all of the satellites we can see here in the uk, so you will get word blindness looking at them

haha word blindness - I like it!

Great I will check out those links. Cheers!

Clone boxes? Again, I am new to this game but when I bought the box it was listed as 'Original Skybox'. What is it a clone of? My money that is true but I certainly don't want to waste it. Thanks ramjet. You are single handidly turning me in to a satellite junkie

only sky sell or rent out original sky boxes m8 and these boxes are nothing like theirs

E2 is an operating system that probably started with dreambox dm800s (but dont take my word for it in case I am wrong), and the dreambox 8000s

many imitations exist, some have evolved, but the point here is that many manufacturers see the market as an opportunity to make money so many have either brought out their own versions or they "clone" the originals

I have no idea what an amiko is, but I believe its an imitation of the highly successful vu range (with elements of the dm800 and dm80000) and there are probably dozens on the market

the dreambox and the vu have also been imitated or cloned

but with all the boxes its the support (the os , the software , the image) that is important as without good software support these boxes fall by the wayside and the junkyard is littered with them

so just focussing on the hardware without knowing the software support could be a bad move

I bought an original duo from a trusted supplier , maybe I should have waited and bought a solo2 from that same supplier

its not an imitation, its not a clone, and the images available for it mean its unlikely to lose support in the future, and the same applied to my original dreambox 800s too

so I personally stay away from clones and imitations as best I can

its also my opinion that these imitators try to cash in on the word sky, so the change of name from openbox was a cynical marketing ploy as people know the bskyb name and brand

so anyone describing what you did should be treated with caution as these boxes like the amiko or vu or dreambox are nothing to do with that legitimate company and are nothing like their products

I could sell you a cardboard box with sly plus wrote on it, and put 2 bricks inside it , from a po box number. I could wax lyrical about it, and once I have your money take off

                  words mean nothing m8

check the facts , check the support, check how long trusted members think that some box will last, check if it has regular updates on images like blackhole or vix or edg nemesis, check if plugins keep being developed, when you need help with your box you need it from others who bought the same box and know the product well enough to give you the help you seek, and I find that aspect only applies to the popular mainstream range so in this case dreambox, vu and clarketech ET ranges, preferably REAL ones and not clones or imitations

or buy a tried and tested box with excellent support from a trusted retailer (like goldwafers and not ebay) and hope you have done the right thing

and no its not easy, so its caveat emptor - buyer beware

Thanks ramjet. I had no idea that cloning was completely out of control like that. When it said original what it really means is an original of a clone which is nonsense. It's been dispatched so looks like I'll have to live with it. It'll be very much a second box and won't be used that often so hopefully won't become much of an issue.

I'll give you ?20 for that cardboarb box and ?10 per brick :-)

Will definitely give a lot of thought about the main box then.

Once thing that just popped into my head. Is it possible to watch the receiver from a remote PC online? This would be very handy. Even better if it worked on an Android tablet!

streaming online to a remote pc or tablet involves compressing the video stream and also depends on the broadband upload speed too

I believe it may be possible with a vu solo2 , possibly with a few other boxes subject to that bb upload ability, but never having tried it I am not the one to answer your specific question

I am sure somebody may have tried this with a vu solo2 or something similar like the clarketech ET series, but I have no idea about the myriad plethora of "pretend or imitation" boxes out there

and if your bb isnt up to it, then it doesnt matter anyway

                        Cheers,

My BB is 100Mb and think the upload is changing to 10Mb shortly so that should be more than enough. I'll look into this at some point but for now I'll just concentrate on getting the basics set up :-)

Something else that just popped into my head. It is likely the dish will be mounted on the front of my house. There is no obstacles in the way so I should be able to get a lot of East facing satellites however, my wall will block West facing satellites. Is this going to be a big problem? Should I beg my installed to fit it on the roof and attach to the chimney? Cheers

I dont believe your chimney is an option as it wont be strong enough, against building regs and the dish cannot project above your roofline

ideally you need to be able to "see" from the southeast at say 42e to the southwest at 30w

hopefully you will get from 0.8w through to 39e as those are the main satellites you require

Thanks for that. I think I might just go with the origianal plan. I could ask him to mount it on the side of the house but then that would also block out north/northeast completely.

you dont need anything north or northeast

the arc is from 30 west through due south to 42 east

                                so southwest to southeast

suggest you go on dishpointer and put your postcode in, use the maps to find your house and place the dish in various positions on your exterior walls and check what the unobstructed arc is from each position
