Try flashing it with it turned off , then turn it on when you hit connect

there is no "connect" button mate , there is a "next" button which i have hit with the box being turned on at varying times , all end up with the screen-shot above .

Upgrade PVR800 HD Tool ~ Using a null modem cable

        Connecting up

If you are using a PC with a dedicated RS232 serial ports, the port reference will usually be COM1 or COM2 depending on which port you connect to.

If you are using an USB to RS232 serial converter cable with the null modem cable, check that you have the correct COM port selected when you start the process.
Sometimes you need to reflash the USB/RS232 software on your PC to activate the com port. The software on the USB/RS232 converter usually selects COM3 or COM4. If you have the wrong port setting you will get a ?can?t find port? error,
although, you don?t always get a port error every time you select the wrong port.

        Upgrade procedure

        Download the file:- "Upgrade_PVR800_HD_Tool.rar"
Unzip this file & you have a folder with 5 files:-

        eromclient.abs, flashburn.ini, sdram.ini,
        LZMA.exe & eromUpgrade.exe & helpfile.txt.

        1. Connect up your PC to the Openbox using a null modem serial cable.
        2. Switch the box OFF.
        3. Run EromUpgrade.exe then check the com port setting is correct
        4. Select the latest firmware .abs file.
        5. Select "next" then switch ON the box & follow the instructions to load
        and flash burn the firmware.
        6. If the process does not start, try various time combinations of switching
the box ON after selecting "next"
        7. Don't switch the power off or disconnect whilst the download & flash is
        taking place.

If you get a memory error it may be because the timing of selecting ?next? and switching the box on is out of sync. Try again & be patient.

cheers for your input hooley , much appreciated mate

now , when selecting com port , port 1 only loads and sticks at

          "syncronising stb
          please reset target"

          ---------------------------------

wereas com port3 returns the above screen shot , (all other com ports numbers return no connection)

is it safe to assume com3 is the active port , as this gets a bit further than 1

          many thanks

Brilliant advice offered in this thread. I reckon this should be made a sticky.

If you have no luck with the above methods you could try a different Port

                            Control Panel/Device Manager
                            go into Device Manager
                            expand Ports (COM & LPT)
(in brackets it will be showing what port it is already connected to, ie COM3)
to change the Port, right click on Communications Port and select Properties
click on the Port Settings tab
                            click on Advanced
here you can change the COM Port Number

in here you can also turn off or change FIFO buffers (which sometimes cured loading problems with the old SV's and eurovox

don't forget to turn it all back when you are finished

tried your method moulee , and still no joy mate,
went to device manager 1st as per smoggy`s info (cheers mate) and looking in there suggests com1 is default
anyhow tried your method with both 1 + 3 and both failed for different reasons
thanks for your input all , much appreciated
