just ordered my openbox S9 HD from ebay, should be here by wednesday latest. Is there a firmware that i should avoid when it comes?

bought an Openbox ?85 delivered from ebay at christmas, upgraded from a dreambox 500s, never had a problem with this box, the dm500s would pause and i would have to reboot every so often, fingers crossed this box has been imacculate and HD!!!
Only thing is sometimes the remote is slow to respond so you press it a few times and then it kicks in and flys past the channels and the Epg is poo

hi Im tempted to get one of these as an upgrade to my dm500s, couple of questions if someone could let me know,

can you install a hardrive?
can you record and pause live tv?

You can record onto a USB, which will limit your recording. The EPG will only show now and next (no 3 day or 7 day epg).
The box is cheap, but you might consider saving a few more quid and going for a Dm800 (clone) for a few qui more.

use a pendrive, 16gb at least had an 8gb but not big enough, as timeshift alone (pause live tv) hogs around 4-5gb and HD recordings take up a lot

I like this box as i have all my AV stuff in the corner of the room in a cabinet and this box runs Cold as Unlike my old DM500s 'mini radiator'

can openbox be telnet like Dreambox? or like any linux ???

No you cant telnet to it, only via serial port on the back or USB connection.
