Almost all other Linux recievers including VU Solo/Duo, ET9000, TM etc etc...are only able to offer lower prices because they are in effect Dreambox clones.

Dream Multimedia hardware products are highly overpriced I agree..but the price you pay is not for the hardware...

Dream pay for the software to be devleped Enigma 1, Enigma 2, they pay Broadcom to devleop the drivers , they pay the devleopment teams to make the software images.

Why do you think almost all other manufacturers of Linux boxes, use the same or similar Broadcom CPU and chipsets as Dream ?? Because all the hard work is already done for them...they dont have to pay for drivers to be written, code bases etc.. They just use modifed Enigma/Enigma 2 Dreambox images.

So in effect theyre clones as well....but they dont pay the software development fees...Without Dream, there would be no Linux Reciver scene...They are the Top Dogs, everone else is just wannabes...

Thats the facts of the matter, I dont personally own any originals, the prices are too high,I have owned Dm500C, Dm500s, Dm600, Dm800HD non pro and Pro version clones. All of them have been very reliable, the only issue I had was on the 800HD non pro, the tuner was an old revision, replaced with a Rev M to fix.

Clones are most defintitely not "dodgy", they are great pieces of kit, nothing comes close for the same price of a clone.

The only people who seem to bad mouth clones, are those with vested interests...They are either sellers of hardware from other manufacturers, fanboys of certain brands, beta testers of other hardware etc...

You can see around many forums...that theres lots of happy clone owners....

Back on topic I had exact same letter. Only i got stung for more than 2 units .
          Let me guess, London Heathrow?
Dhl have a lockup/ warehouse there and customs are the custodian, basically they are above the law and answer to nobody. Seems strange they intercepted a shipment of 2 tho . Usually go for bigger orders. Most smaller orders normally go via west midlands without issue, maybe getting hit for taxes 50% of the time.
Unlucky op, I know how you feel but it just shows the risks involved and why resellers whack 50% + on there selling price.
for future referance ups is a far safer courier as no depot for customs to go sniffing round!

This was over 2 weeks ago
today I got a letter from Dream Property GmbH solicitors, yes u are reading correct, basically they are saying that I'm trying to import dodgy boxes and Is a trademark infringement, they want my consent to destroy the boxes or if I object to the destruction of the goods the letter reads " our client will initiate court action against you and seek an injunction to restrain your importation of the goods and an order for the destruction of the goods, as well as a claim for damages and costs"
I think I better let this one go, what u think?
Customs have opened up the box and then they checked all the serials contacted dream, damn they know what there searching for.
I think it's time for our friends in HK to start making just plain boxes with no branding, change the front panel and packaging to be plain.
Any way I'm a couple of hundred out of pocket but let's hope they can sort out some compo, fingers crossed
the exact same thing happened to a friend of mine, ordered 10 boxes from hk,waited for them to arrive, same letter from dhl and same threat from dream property, fleabay is best bet to order these type of stb..

Why the **** is the OP getting grief here? All he has done is give us some info, if you dont want the info dont read it.

I order a few DM800's in from HK and have never had a problem, have only had about 15 though, so not exactly hundreds. I always get my package (oooerr) opened by customs, get a small charge and it gets through to me. This week was a bit different though, had a box of 4 come in from HK and they got through without even a charge - which I found very strange! So obviously mate you just got really unlucky! Can you enlighten us on which supplier you got yours from? Or just drop me a PM so we can compare..

The thing is we know we are buying clones and if you dont then thats your own fault.

But given the price they are actually good. No matter if they are clones or legit, you will always get issues. The most being the crappy psu they supply but thats easily replaced.

Now an interesting thought is, if the demise of CS was to hit and providers were able to stop cards from being used in 3rd party receivers what are they going to do then ? will their prices be so high?

                  Anyway, @OP.

                  Cheers for the heads up.

If you paid by paypal, plead ignorance and claim back your money as you were sold fake goods.

Good thing is if they have confirmed they were fake for you then is saves you paying dream to do it, to prove they are fakes.

Hope it works out for you.

I'd just write them off to be honest, I wouldn't want to upset my supplier by trying to claim back from them, its the risks you take by importing clones. Either way, thats the OP's choice.

Id also ask the supplier to maybe the goods via a different courier in the future, just to see if there customs section are a bit less picky

Sorry mate my post wasnt meant to offend you was curious why they pick on the small guy and not the bigger companies.
As for buying abroad i think its worth the risk especially the price you pay from UK dealers.
Ive a clone and why would you want to pay twice as much for a similar item.It wont stop me from buying more clones.
Im glad you made your post as this will at least warn weary people and give them a heads up.
To add my tv must be a clone it a LG and not made by J L Baird!

Maybe ime missing something here ,
But when did Dreambox 800hd boxes become Dodgy
Cant recall if it comes with cam installed
Know mine came with Gemini image on it
But unless modified some way by the user
I would say if you want to pay 400 t0 1000 pounds for a free veiw receiver its up to you
And i would be quick enough to point out that fact to the customs
And also ask for compensation for the delay of your product seeing how you have missed the tennis on BBC1

Clone is a copyright infringement. That's why they confiscate

Never had any similar issue with orders from China using DHL. Most of the time just get hut with a charge.

Thanks for the thread but makes you think DreamMultimedia really are now trying to stop the clone market.

Also as for people on this thread making out that clones 'dont work' or have issues and problems, I dont find that always to be the case, if you use a good supplier then you can gain a great receiver. My receivers are all clones and I dont have any issues with them, there still going strong and and I believe they will for a long time to come.

If DreamMultimedia really want to take on the clone market then a good place to start would be by lowering there prices. It's also not always a case that someone only goes for a clone because they cant afford a original some of us can but just cannot justify paying they sorts of prices.
