why do we need alcohol? why do people encourage others to drink and think they are boring farts if they dont? does alcohol give you something your lifes missing? how would you react if someone told you you drink too much - would you go for a liver function test to prove their wrong etc.

just wanted a kinda sensible debate on alcohol thats all.

i did have a few last sat when i was out and got to say it didnt really do anything for me.
    Homer simpson got it right

I drink most nights,it might be a can or two or it might be a few whiskys and a can or two,in our house its a case of `if its there we will drink it,if its not then go to the shops and get some,`a bottle of whisky can last a week or a month, and a case of any kind of beer can sit in the fridge for hours before its used.I suppose we do drink more than is deemed good for us but its our choice and until it affects our jobs, or my workhorse of a liver starts to slide out of my rectum then we shall continue, and to be honest i could stop drinking i just dont want to!

i should also say it was actually my nieces other half that suggested it. it was he that said "well you cant drink for 9 months so neither will i" - he lasted a week.

i didnt think it was such a big deal to give it up for a few months and most of you guys seem horrified but why? thats the question to answer

why do we need drink in our life. does it make you feel better?

on the other hand what if for health reasons you were told you couldnt drink anymore. my ex had heart valve disease and hasnt drank for 20 yrs (he is 49). he copes with it very well.

its funny how you all thought it was ashleighs idea for her other half not to drink when it wasnt. us women always get the blame.

however its worth noting for future conversations etc. he wants a baby - well err naw as i wont stop drinking for 9 months so there

I've 7 cans of Devils Bit and an almost full bottle of Hennessy at my feet and can't be ar*ed to bend down for them.
Was a time when I drank for Ireland.

                    Cheers.

Sgscott totally agree i work hard so sometimes when ive finished a hard days work i want a beer or two.

Lainie i think you are looking way to much in to this several of us have given you reasons why, if you dont see them as valid reasons then thats your choice but they are to us. Having a drink does not have to be a problem.

I'm pretty much a self impossed non drinker when I'm in my own house as I get nothing out of alcohol. When I was younger I spent a stupid amount of money going on the piss with my mates. I'd drink all day and just get full up but not drunk and wake up about 6am feeling fine but skint. I did it for years before realising how much I was spending. I've only ever got drunk on Port or Whisky. Beer is like water so I rarely touch it. Probably drink one pint per week on a Wednesday night when I go hill walking.

Full respect to your mate for thinking of the baby but if alcohol is your relief crack on as long as it's not causing damage I don't see a problem. There's plenty of worse things to worry about.

In my youth I'd be out drinking every week, occasionally to the point where I needed help to walk (but not very often).

Then my parents forced me to learn to drive. From that point on my drinking became less & less. I just preferred to drive rather than drink. But when I did drink I got in some nasty states.

After a heavy day of drinking I spent 7 hours retching my guts up. Since then I've not drank alcohol... 11 years, 7 months, 14 days, 13 hours & 52 minutes..... But who's counting

At times I do have to fight the urge to have a drink, but that's usually because of stress & shit in my life.

Now there are medical reasons why I should stay away from it.

If the question was about junk food, I'd have a really hard time trying to give it up
