Softmodding A Black Wii

Hiya guys,

Right, well I got a black Wii for Chrimbo, and its pretty much sat idle since, and so what I really want to do is softmod it to run games off of a USB hard drive, and possibly play DVD's if there's software out there to do that.

Hi mate, try this easy method here http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...w-guide-67927/ to softmod your wii. make sure you are running 4.2e first if not connect to the net and do a system update before you start.

The black wii's can only be used with a external hdd or large storage pen drive they cannot read back up dvds same as with wii's purchased within the last 6 months or so.

Give the method above a go its very easy to follow and works like a charm it will also include the usb loader that you will require.

Wow thanks so much man! It worked a dream. Cause it's a black wii it asked me if I wanted to install booii as an ios. I haven't done that yet, do I need that or do I just leave it as it is?

if you can load preloader now to do a nand back up i would do it now to be honest. load it up and see if it will let you do a nand back up. try this Digital Kaos - Downloads - Preloader

Do I put that on the same SD card as bannerbomb and the hackmii install? Also, do I need bootmii?

a nand backup is a image of your wiis memory,preloader is a program that runs between your nand and the program your using

So does the preloader enable you to take a copy of it? I see the link no longer works either.
What is the likelihood of running this MMM app without having to take a copy of the wii memory?

Do I first d/l preloader to an SD card and then run that first to tkae a copy?
Then when I've done that am I able to just copy the latest softmod folders to the sd card and run the MMM app that does everything for you?
Is that possible?

it does not matter if you install preloader first or not follow this tut HOWTO: Make a NAND Backup with Bootmii and how to restore. Ade's Softmodding Wii blog you want the part bootmii as a iso,personaly i would install preloader first then make the backup,just put preloader in your apps folder and run it from homebrew channel,follow the first tutorial i sent you to

this is a .rar file. is this correct? If I just copy this file to the SD card will it allow me to run it on the wii?

Also this may sound stupid, but in the guide how to install preloader, it says at point 6 load homebrew channel? What is the homebrew channel - is the main screen that has all the channels on it, for example the disc top left, IPlayer, etc?

Also it says if you want to use bootmii as IOS, which is what you recommended, it says you need a gamecube controller. I dont have one of these, is this critical?

Is that something you can do by inserting the original CD or a copied CD into the Wii and then using one of the apps to copy it across to the HD?

rar files need unraring, download a free program called winrar and unrar your file.

the homebrew channel is a extra channel that will be added to your wiis menu when you mod your wii,you wont miss it as it says homebrew channel on it.
preloader you dont need a gamecube controller you can use the reset and power buttons to navigate the menu.
as for the tutorial you do need to put the files on the sd card but it wont do it for you,you have to do it yourself,just follow the steps carefully and dont miss any,its not as hard as it looks.
backup dvds yes you can borrow your friends,once your modded you can put them in your drive start uloader and transfer them to your hdd.
sorry i didnt explain things at the start i thought you already had a modded wii.
