any Av software will slow down your system. to some extent. I use mcafee and when it runs in the background cheking the files you are creating it is no prob... but if you schedule a system scan then it takes up most of your proccessor resources until the scan is complete
Avast is a good free verson of av software

Another vote for this combination. Fit and forget.

ESET NOD32 is the best paid antivirus, I would say AVG is 1 of the best free ones imo.

                MSE and Malwarebytes

As a pc builder im often asked this question. Personally i find the Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes is all you need. Both are free and my pc is not slowed down in any way. Ive have tried EVERY combination of products and with this combo, my pc runs fast, smooth and is clean. Best of all though is that they are both free, so it will cost you nothing to try

                  AVG free
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

and XP firewall work just fine for me.

Another vote for NOD32, doesn't give false positives on stuff like keygens, Avast tends to do that.

I use Avast. Free for non commercial users. Why do I use it (apart from obvious - $0)? It does not slow down my PC so much. However I cannot say anything about its efficiency hence I do not catch any viruses

Over the years I have tried most of the free anti virus programs but as KillerDog says Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall dose a good job. Been using it for over a year now with no problems.

Lets do it to them... before they do it to us...

For free live protection I use Avast and have preferred it over AVG as I don't have to monitor it constantly. I don't like the Sandbox with Avast Pro though.
For on demand I sometimes use Malwarabytes Anti Malwarabytes but prefer to use SuperAntiSpyware free edition.
For my firewall I've just started to use Comodo but can't say how good it is yet but it did give me problems with using my touch pad when it kept blocking Synaptics Syn TP. Since adding Syn to my my trusted vendor I have had no other real issues with it apart from having to allow things to run that I thought I already had. That being the case it's better than when had windows firewall which I told to block something and it allowed it to run anyway.
