I use microsoft Security Essentials and got hit with a virus from a web site, (was'nt even ~~~~) by the time mse poped up I was infected, (FakeSySdef and Alureon.fs) plus a couple others I deleted before writing them down. Result was black desktop no task manager and nothing listed in system tools except internet explorer (no add-ons). I was able to run system restore from command prompt and got everything back o.k.

I use Microsoft security essentials because it pretty lightweight. But i don't put to much faith in anitivirus . make sure that important data is always backed up

                          ESET

I am the IT dept. for 23 small business with many computers and have been for about 15yrs. now, I've used many differant AV products and found that the best combo is ESET nod32 SS and Malwarebytes Pro. When my customers are unable to use their computers they don't make any money and I have to answer to them. This combo works best for me and mine.

"Avira Free" since 2010 and have not looked back since.
Nor looked anywhere else for that matter.

Then I use "CCleaner" twice a day and "Malwarebytes" once a week. "Mydefrag" once a month to sweep up the litter on the harddisks

VIPRE antivirus, tried the rest and this is best!! Been using this the last 2 years and surfed some pretty rough stuff. Never had a problem and you can view quaranteed items and restore keygens if they get get taken
