anyone heard of Satellite box feeds causing problems with normal tv Aerial feeds ?

The council's contractor aerial/sat tech guy is coming out tomorrow morning first thing, I was hoping if someone here could please put it into words for me to say exactly what I should say to the guy as I ain't got a clue what IRS systems and all that are and the technical stuff you guys are talking about, you know what I mean ?
He could turn round and say something to me like, errm, "its your VU box mate thats faulty" or something like that and I wont know how to argue my way out of that, you guys know what I mean ?
Right now I have the satellite cable feed plugged back into the VU box and its allowing the Terrestrial tv channels to work on all the tv's in the house but the second I put the VU box onto standby it knocks out all the terrestrial tv channels even on the living room tv too.
I would be so very greatful honestly if someone could just tell me what to say to the guy and what not to say, please man ? Thanks guys.Comment

seems to me the answer is simple
you disconnect the sky box , hide the VU box and state that there are no freeview signals on the tv
you then tell him that if you plug in the old sky box the freeview comes back , so you think there is a power issue with the distribution system which should have its own separate power supply as it feeds all the flats
so if they nicked your power to power the communal distribution equipment , then YOU were paying for the power that supplies the communal equipment
they should have it working independently so all the flats receive freeview from a common communal distribution system with its own power supply
once they have sorted out this powered communal distribution system and you get just freeview and nothing else is plugged in except your freeview tv , you check that the same living room tv gets the freesat signal as well
if the above is ok , you connect the sky box to one of the sat feeds and check you get bbc1 and itv etc on the sly box (freesat)
then you put the sky box RF back in and check the freeview is on in the bedrooms as well , with the slybox on standby
when he is gone , you reconnect the VU feed 1 ( lnb1 on the duo rear panel ) and all should be back to how it should be
my opinion ? they nicked your power supply to feed the distribution equipment , because your power never goes off but somebody elses did, but its costing you money to power the system whilst the other flats get it for free
OR
the power supply failed and it gets its power from a sky box or the vu as a backup system , as suggested by somebody else earlier
th simple fact is that if you have NO sat boxes installed at all, the freeview should work regardless , the 2 sat feeds are a free bonus to feed a sly plus box normally (but some people might only want the freebies that is freeview , which their system has to feed regardless , even if you only had one freeview tv in the living roomLast edited by ramjet; 7 December, 2016, 01:45.Comment

Exactly.
I agree with ramjet. Don't mention the VU box at all. Hide it. You can prove that the system isn't working as it should be by using the sky+ box instead. You shouldn't need to have an old ugly sky+ box in your living room, just to keep your terrestrial signals alive.
I know that you use the sky+ box at the moment to split the terrestrial signal to provide a connection to the return socket for the upstairs feed, but once the system is working normally you can get rid of the sky+ box (if you no longer need it for FTA channels) & replace it with a small signal splitter.Comment

I have taken away the VU box completely for now, I have only left one single Satellite feed coming out from the wall socket which is now plugged into the built in freesat connection on the living room TV,...Exactly.

everything else is still exactly the same way, the old sky+ box is still sitting there with all the RF cables going in and out of it and into the wall sockets etc, and now I have no DVB terrestrial tv aerial signal at all to either the living room tv or the bedroom tv. (no Sat feed is going into the sky+ box and I will be throwing the sky+ box in the bin in a day or two once this is all over with, I felt like throwing it in the bin just now but thought best not just now).
Surely that has to be the best way to present this case to the Aerial/sat contractor guy that comes out ? I mean, its not everyone even that has or wants any type of Satellite box anyway, so I simply want and need to URGENTLY have the dvb terristrial signal to my living room tv and my bedroom tv fully working without the need for any other boxes required, surely to goodness that is how its supposed to be and surely that is the way they are meant to fix the bloomin thing properly anyway in the first place, Yeah, No
?
The Guy should hopefully be out first thing this morning (thursday), the other azz that was meant to come earlier on Wednesday didn't arrive, stupid idiots !
Anyways, tell me what you guys think on what I have done now to approach this situation please, all sensible comments very much greatly welcomed, thank you

FFS man
, the idiot didnt turn up this morning either after getting everything ready, so I called the council and they said woops ! they admitted taking the notes and not arranging the booking for the guy to come out, IDIOTS !!!.
So, they said for sure 100% the guy will be out tomorrow morning 9th Dec 2016, thank flerck....
How does this sound to you guys in the know for what I have done with the boxes and cables then, is this the best Idea ?

sounds ok for now , yes
I think they pinched your power supply for the communal equipment when that other episode occurred , now you are not powering their gear it has failed
the old sly box is used to distribute a feed to the main tv and a feed to the bedroom tv,s , so will be required for now when he has gone
once this has been sorted, either use the slybox to dual feed the main tv and the bedroom tv,s , or use a splitter and cables to split the aerial feed to the main tv and the bedrooms, if necessary a powered splitter/booster like the SLX4 way or similar , but the slybox will do the job just as easily (almost any slybox will split the rf feed)
but for now leave it as it is and maybe he will find a way to power the communal stuff instead of using your slybox or your vu box
after all, the freeview should work regardless to the main socket in the living room , after that it all depends on the internal distribution
so the main tv should receive 2 feeds from the wall socket , one from freeview and one from freesat satellite on 28e , with NO POWER SUPPLY required from your personal equipment
once he has fixed that part to your satisfaction, its just a case of getting the bedroom freeview working and reconnecting the VU after he has eaten his hobnobs and drank his tea and gone out the door

I found the splitter/amplifier you refer to, still dont have a clue what that has to do with Satellite though, I naturally thought that satellite and terrestrial dvd aerials worked totally independent of each other, hmmm
I hope the guy has something like that amp/splitter thing in his van and gives me it for the normal price as you can see here >>>> https://www.amazon.co.uk/SLx-Aerial-.../dp/B0009D5W0Q
edit : just noticed it says this is the newer version of that amp/splitter although I dont know whats the difference with them, see here >>> https://www.amazon.co.uk/SLx-27820BM...dp_ob_title_ce
Do these have their own power supply these units, I guess so yes ? I think I remember years ago having something similar and it had to be electric powered or else they dont work plus they give better picture quality too, correct, yeah ?Last edited by Saltire; 8 December, 2016, 21:31.Comment

in some ways yes, plus they usually have their own PSU built in , so have a cable and 13amp mains plug , but a slybox does the same job as a 2 way splitter/booster and it too comes with its own built in psu
I did say dont worry about it for now , concentrate on getting these issues sorted so that you get freeview and 28.2e freesat satellite at that main wallplate and on your main tv too , the actual technical workings are not relevant to your understanding of how these combined systems in flats work, that is why the engineer gets paid
out here in the real world we tend to have an outside aerial with a single feed to the main living room, either as a cable or to a wallplate , and a dual sly feed from a sly dish to feed a sly plus box , so 3 (or 2) cables and maybe a wallplate as well
YOU have a communal system that combines these things and is nowhere near like mine (mine being like I said above)Last edited by ramjet; 9 December, 2016, 01:07.Comment

@ Ramjet
thanks again mate and everyone else that commented as this is driving me nuts man, loL.
When you say "wall plate", do you mean that actual main white plastic wall socket thing that is screwed on to wall in the living room that I showed you all photos of earlier, yes ?
This one I mean in the photo, so this could easily be faulty too, yeah ? >>

If you want to test if you still get Freeview in the other rooms without looping through the Sky receiver then just take the aerial lead out of the aerial input on the back of the receiver and then plug that into the 'Return' feed on the wall plate that is clearly labelled in your picture, at the moment you have nothing plugged into that 'Return' feed which makes me wonder how you are getting Freeview channels in the other rooms
