Plamy, can you do some testing to rule out some of the possibility? Did you try record FTA channel is it work properly ? if you purely play the encrypted channel for long hour without recording will it hang? is the time always sync with server??

Stanley,
I am not sure what to check for clock sync but the time displayed on my STB did freeze when the recording hangs (so when I check at 8pm, the time displayed on LCD will be e.g. 7:05pm). Also, when the box hangs, it requires a power cycle to get it working again. Once the box is rebooted, the STB clock shows the time as it is on my wall clock.
Test done with clock NOT sync'd to transponder.
Just tried recording FTA channels - it records properly, I even tried recording continuously for 6 hours without hanging.
Viewing encrypted channels over VLC - hangs intermittently. Usually 1 to 2 hours after the streaming started. Have not been able to watch any shows beyond 2.5 hours.
Any other suggestions?

i think it could be due to bad sectors on hdd during recordings.
we were going through the occasional stoppages with recording; be it timer, fta, fta hd, other channels...we will delete away the failed recordings, and the same bad sector is reuse again maybe not the next but it does happened again. my wife then decided to keep one of the failed recording without deleting and since then, the recordings are behaving well the past few days. let's see if it resolved the problem.
credits to my wife who chipped in with the troubleshooting.

UPDATE/CORRECTION
might not be a bad sector on hdd after all.
recently i have tried using a newest addition image (SG-Open Pli-dm800se-SSL-84b.nfi) but to no avail as it gave an error (The timer file (timers.xml) is corrupt and could not be loaded.) with timer recording.
i then decided to switch back to early version by bro ypvs (Cnigma-OpenPli 2.1-dm800se-ssl84b.nfi ( posted on 9th July, 2012 by ypvs ), updated the panel and it is as steady as a rock ever (since 24/04/2013).
those who are having trouble with recording might wanna give it a thought (bonus: bootup picture of cherry blossom is more cheerful
).

I have done the same and so far for the past 6 hours, timer recording was problem free. Seems like updating the panel was the crucial step. My box was still hanging after awhile of recording before the update.UPDATE/CORRECTION
