I have always worked in public sector, and I work in public sector as a choice. I work there to help the most vulnerable in society. I could earn laods more money doing a similar job in the private sector but cboose not to.

I do own my own house, but lived until I was 18 in a council house, in possibly the roughest estate in Liverpool which is the 7th lowest level of deprevation indices in the country. I am not privaleged, me and my family have had to fight for everything and anything we have got - that is just like most people on here.

Shipping containers used are around 305 sq/ft - have a look at this.

Mary Lee's Life in 300 Square Feet House Tour | Apartment Therapy

I would love to have 4 acres of land as my garden, with a ride on lawn mower - why cant I have that? Can we have that as a right - I want that as a right? My brother and cousins who live in Texas have got 5 times that and it costs them very little??

If you was to take a proper balanced view, you could argue that the so called 'bedroom tax' is harsh and the people who brought it in need to know what is going on at ground level. However, the people making the claims need to get off their arse and do something about it. Personal responsibility.

Has said above about people falling on hard times, we should do all we can and more to help people who have fallen on hard times. But you cannot fall on hard times for 5 years continuously - ...

My own personal opinion is that people who come out of work should get a %age of the salary for the first 2 years on a decreasing scale and then after 2 years you get statutory minimum which should be where it is now. I would caveat that saying that you need to be in the job for say 2 years before this happens, and if you are sacked becuase of gross misconduct you should just go to bare min straight away.

People who are disabled and cannot work, and I mean cannot work, should be given the best help and made comfortable for the lives.

Edit ---- I don't think people should live in the containers, however, I do think they are good for temporary rehousing, short stay, homeless, personal refuge.

Depends if its a 40ft container or a 20ft container.

If single, then a 20 footer is loads of space.
      thats 20ft x 8ft...= 160 sq ft....sounds ok to me.

      Shower , basin and wc.= 8ft x 5ft

      Bedsitter, 15ft x 8ft, nice and cosy!

Woodburning stove, solar panels on the roof,

      40ft x 8ft= 320sq ft, a 50ft narrow boat is 50x7=350 sq ft.

In fact it sounds positively inviting.........save up some more dosh and put 2 together,,,bloody luxury..

BEFORE anyone starts, yes, I have lived in much less space than that.

If you think living in containers is bad. Try living in a shell scrape, snow hole, atap in the jungle or a few holes in the ground which I've had the pleasure of living in while being hundreds if not thousands of miles from my family; receiving in coming fire and "PAYING TAX" for the privilage. At the end of the day if you're fit enough as long as you've a roof over your head and food in your belly you're not as hard done by as thousands of others out there. Before you give the old "it was your choice" I lived that life to put food on the table and give me a standard of life which wasn't available to me at the time in civi street. Nothing to do with Queen and Country.

Ultimately if long term this policy convinces some to pay attention at school to get qualifications which may make them employable and deter them from popping out kids that they can't support it can only be a good thing for the Country. Currently it pays a lot of people to never work due to the generosity of benefits when you take housing and everything into consideration.

We all know it could have been better thought out and I'm sure if the majority want changes to the system they can vote for the party that will do what's best for them, but looking at all the polls the majority support the changes so maybe we should do the democratic thing and go with it and maybe use our energies to make it work as opposed to trying to throw up barriers.

I've just checked out the shipping containers and they're pretty good. I'd have no issues living in one of those. The last time I lived in a shipping container was for 6 months in Cookstown Ireland during the troubles. All I had was a lower bunk of a row of three bunk beds. No windows, air conditioning or flat screen TV. In fact all we had was our bed, a light and a metal box for my personal affects. I shared 6 showers with about 250 guys, who knows some may have been rapists, mad axe murderers etc Some people just have to take a step back and realise how lucky they are. There's plenty of countries where you get no assistance... Shift+R improves the quality of this image. CTRL+F5 reloads the whole page.

I left school at 15 and have not got any kwalifikashuns.

But, despite being born off Great Homer Street, brought up in penniless surroundings,......managed to get a job the same week as leaving school, and stayed working for the next 51 years.

I have not much time for people who are out of work, sorry.

90% of them can earn money if they wanted to.

Didnt people used to gather coal etc..

I can remember flogging sandstone pieces that I pinched from Anfield Cemetery, loaded in an old pram, door to door, loads of customers for 3d a chunk.
Minding bikes that the football supporters travelled on , 3d again!
            Paper rounds, whatever.

            Thats before leaving Junior school.

I could fill the forum with things I have had to do to put food on the table over the years.

I think people lack ingenuity, or the real will to earn a crust.

I still remember buying broken biscuits,or buying an oxo cube to nibble on when I was a kid,...like it was yesterday.

"I would love to have 4 acres of land as my garden, with a ride on lawn mower - why cant I have that? Can we have that as a right - I want that as a right? My brother and cousins who live in Texas have got 5 times that and it costs them very little??"

Whats so cool about a ride on mower?

If you had to cut my lawn every week you would soon want swap it for a little garden.

what a load of rubbish some people talk man, if you want to talk about living for years in harsh conditions then how about living in a tenement flat in what was once the largest council housing estate in Europe and the hardest and roughest and toughest too, its slightly better now but still bad.

But try living for years n years with no windows (yes no glass in the windows) in freezing and I mean freezing like your coldest winters on record etc when parts of the sea froze over and all that, also no fridge, couldn't afford one for mega years, first tv was a portable black and white tv when most other people had fancy big colour TV's, no flooring at all in whole house just floorboards, no money to buy anything at all, always needing handouts which were few and far between because a lot of people were in the same boat too (but we all stood by each other unlike the people of today), had to go skips and bins etc outside for things to burn in the fire to try and get a heat, doors that didn't lock because they got kicked in so many times and people would rob you of anything they could get their hands on, bringing up a family of many members and never being able to buy them shoes or clothes to go to school (had to get handouts for that), and never able to buy any the family a birthday or Christmas gift, if you could it would be something that cost pennies and that was luxury.

Makes me laugh when I hear people talking about "hard times" !

And guess what, even back then it was the same poxy English Government's that done this not only to us Scots but even to the English people too, Westminster make me sick man !!!!!!!!!

Anyway, this thread is starting to go off course again as meant to be about bedroom tax, , we should try really to stick to that or else we could write 1000 books, LOL.

                        The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

If if's and buts were pots and pans!!! Listen - dont say if - if you feel that strong and you think the majority of people will support you then run for cllr, or MP --- then you will truly see if people support you.

This is my main issue with people all over - if you want to - you can...... Stop blaming others, get off your arse and change the rules --- that is if you feel that strongly. Quit shouting about it.
