The thought has been seriously going through my mind for a few years mate and every person I know knows that I have what it takes for people to follow me, well in Scotland anyway, I wouldn't want to stand for an English Government, its not quite as easy as you think though, I already have friends that are MP's and MSP's who I visit at home regularly and vice versa etc, so I do know quite a lot about it, but and it is a but, its a hell of a lot to take on and I am not sure I am in a fit enough state like I used to be to take on the challenge, heart attacks etc etc but that's another story, hmmmmm, it is tempting though, but yes, you are correct, anyone can stand as a candidate that wants to, but you need to be pretty good or you would get slaughtered, I wouldn't get slaughtered, I might die in the process though,If if's and buts were pots and pans!!! Listen - dont say if - if you feel that strong and you think the majority of people will support you then run for cllr, or MP --- then you will truly see if people support you.
This is my main issue with people all over - if you want to - you can...... Stop blaming others, get off your arse and change the rules --- that is if you feel that strongly. Quit shouting about it.

Flyingpig, in my opinion you have quite a well balance view of things and I agree with much of what you say.
A point in one of your posts that I would disagree with though is ::
" we should do all we can and more to help people who have fallen on hard times. But you cannot fall on hard times for 5 years continuously - ..."
This situation can happen if the unemployment has occurred because of injury or a medical condition that is unlikely to improve in the near future or indeed is likely to worsen.
Personally, when my I was operated on I expected to be back in work within 5 to 6 weeks as this was the normal recovery time; unfortunately that was not the case and almost 3 years on and a mental break-down on top of it, I am still no closer to being fit for work. Had it not been for my wonderful wife who has cared and looked after me so well, I believe I would probably have committed suicide. I have felt suicidal during this time and it took a lot to actually admit it to my doctor, because I was always of the opinion that you just man up, dust yourself down and get on with it. It hurts to admit to yourself that you cannot even manage that !!
I attempt the exercises I have been given to the point where I cannot stand the pain, in an attempt to improve my physical condition and I reply on subjects like this on forums to exercise my brain and to improve my confidence and I would love to be able to be a representative of those I talk of, but I am also realistic and I know that I am but a shell of my former self and would crumble completely under the strain.Comment

@ rds60h, I hear you mate loud and clear and understand you fully and know where you are coming from, more than you may realise infact, I do fully sympathise with you because I can almost feel the same thing you are going through mate and none of this Stupid English Governments ideas are helping, I know already what they are up to along with the USA too, they are doing same thing to their people, they are trying to wipe most of us off the face of the planet, but they are hoping we do it for them like loads have already done because of the stress and that is to take our own lifes, don't even think that thought mate, just rise above them all mate and don't allow the stupid demons to beat you down, I know its difficult sometimes, but you are stronger than they will ever be, and do not worry about a thing either mate

This is part of the first sentence of the above article :: "The Red Cross will this winter start collecting and distributing food aid to the needy in Britain for the first time since the Second World War"
Every Government Minister and indeed every MP in this country should hang their head in shame at that statement !!!!
They need to stop discussing other countries affairs and handing out aid that depletes our own coffers and look in their own back yard and start to do something constructive for those in need in this country......................Not line the pockets of those with money by selling off on the cheap National Assets like the Royal Mail, and then have the cheek to say "What a lovely bonus for those Royal Mail workers who were given ?1000 of shares each" It won't be such a bonus when they are laid off to make the "No Longer Royal" Mail more profitable to pay dividends for the large stock holders !!Comment

The minute the government wrapped this up as a "spare bedroom subsidy" the cause was lost. The unemployed and people who claim housing benefit are in the minority compared to those that work. Whether it's fair or not makes no difference, the government won the propaganda war by pitting those who pay taxes and those that don't, and so need the benefit, against each other. Those that pay the taxes see it as saving them money, though where the 'savings' are going is anyone's guess since the savings will probably be swallowed up by court costs instead. *shrug* It's typical of Tory tactics and will only stop when they bite the majority. However with the sell off of the Post Office and next year the shares in Lloyds the government will be able to 'give' more tax incentives to those that are working just before an election. Work it out for yourself. My master plan is to live forever..... going to plan so far
Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.
No good deed goes unpunished....
