I would imagine it will be a Good few years before everything is HD on 28.2? east, i mean they just cannot force a channel which is run by another company to go HD or they lose what that channel has to offer and whats there big marketing campaign more choice for the consumer it wont be if they axed everyone who would not switch there channel to HD.

Also anyone any idea of what the Transponders cost to lease between DVB-S and DVB-S2 after all Astra own and lease transponder space so its there price structure that has to be considered as well.

Would it be economically viable for sly to pay an engineer to go to each house with old boxes and change for a new/recon HD+ one free of charge, abolish the ?10.25 a month for HD and rent transponder bandwidth to convert all channel to HD (including +1's)?

That would seem like a very pricey endeavour, in my opinion.

They don't need to change all channels to hd as the hd boxes allow you to watch sd channels,
And no need to abolish ?10.25 per month as this is optional,

I don't think it will cost as much as you think,
Their engineers will be kept busy when this time of year they are very low on new installations,
And I'm sure they will have a good stock of pvr5 boxes as they will know how many they need otherwise they would not be making the changes now
This has all been planned to meet their budget

And that is exactly why i stated it would take some time they are not going to do one mass visit to 4 million homes to swap out old PVR3's and white multiroom boxes etc...

They will initially phase it in exactly how one member has had a letter to swap his over and i would imagine that for every old PVR or multi room that gowes wrong and they get a call its not hard to swap these over for a PVR5 or the new multi room HD box.

At the end of the day its a slow phase out for the old machines its happening now how long it takes who knows ask the string.

Yes I agree with the sd side of things but I don't think it will be long for us to say bye bye to hd,
Also Avc finish their contract with sly in september and they will be aiming to get these switched by then.

More than likely on the HD side totally agree, as for AVC they finished last month they are on interim for the next 6 months then it reverts back to In-House

Mate dont go round with blinkers on, just take a look at Viasat and Nova HD gone and no sign of it coming back, there are encryptions that have been changed on packages for years and still no sign of anything being done these either get used to the idea no team with a magic wand will come up with a fix your living in fantasy land if you think that.

I don't know what the costs are but all I know its not cheap to broadcast from Astra and use the Sly platform.

Astra charge for the use of the transponder and Sly charge the channel for the epg slot it occupies on their platform.

I've had the e-mail and I use a Thomson box. I have repeatedly refused to upgrade as the TV it's connected to does not have HDMI only component - now if Sky want to give me a nice new 42" HDTV with HDMI, then I will let them upgrade my Thomson box.

I'm guessing the service that will no longer be available is HD PPV movies. I would guess they are ceasing broadcasting them and changing to IP streaming only. I would assume they would like to shift the SD PPV to IP only as well to free up some transponders.
