i try this i did and had to reflash the box!!!!!!!!!!!
I am really sorry mate to put you in trouble. I tried this 3 times before my post and managed to change it.
It looks like the outcome of this error could have diffrent effect on our boxes.

not a problem mate ,the fatel error just wudnt go away and cudnt get into the menu to change settings, used my back up image all sorted again..
Not only does your image work but it worked first time:
-Fixed my faulty Dreambox (DreamUp/Serial)...and I thought it was hardware fault....Most impressed! (I had no channels; no video, no splash screens, no ethernet.......Nothing)
-Loaded ROMs etc (SmartFTP) ;-)
-Allowed me to reload my old services/bouquets (DreamboxEdit) to suit Tivo channel numbering.
If it makes a decent cup of tea in the morning I will be recommending you for a knighthood......
been having a play and noticed that when i ftp the magic files across everything is 100% but when i do a factory reset then the magic files (and everything else in var gets deleted)
Whats the best way to keep these files in more permenantly, i was thinkin of editing a file that conained a list of what to delete, if that fails then can any 1 confirm that its a ubuntu / squashfs jobby and adding share/keys and share/scce into the read only part of the image ?
/var is a separate memory location from the rest of the image. the actual files in /var are originally put in /var_init when the image is created. when u do a factory reset or when its first booted up after a flash, everything in /var is erased and the files in /var_init are copied to /var. if u want to have the magic files in the image, it wouldnt be a FTA image any more and we wouldnt be able to host it here.
folk are just going to need to learn a little more about their bo and not take things for granted anymore. backup a working image and you'll always have something to fall back on. there's a function for backing up and restoring services and a full image backup function so people have no excuse.
Ah ok, I get you now! You can edit the squashfs part if you have a linux environment, I think I posted a rough guide how to do it or I'll see if I can find it again.
