you will get there its just a case of taking your time.. the more you read and using trial and error you will get it. its a good feeling when you finish it knowing you have saved yourself alot of money and you can sort it yourself if there are any future problems, regards mdt

maybe not at right angles but certainly a lot more to the right from your back door than the sly dish

your back wall is aiming out at maybe 39e or 42e , so a good 45 degrees compared to your back wall for thor , maybe more

as for 30w that would be even further round or blocked by the next door neighbours house, providing you did not hit your back wall with your dish

I would hazard a guess that you can get from 42e , though south and thor and over to maybe 12.5w or 15w, but you will be mainly between 39e and 0.8w

height is irrelevant unless there are obstructions in the way, like trees or buildings
if it can see the sky from a centre line off your back wall round to the neighbours back wall , its fine as thats a 90 degree arc

Personally for ease seeing as you have a $ly dish at the side of your property it may be wise to send the dish on the motor to 28.2? east then fine tune the Dish/Motor combination from there as you have a $ly dish up for comparison so you should be able to line it up easier using the $ly dish as a yard stick

No as Ramjet rightly pointed out as long as there is no obstructions in the line of sight

not just chrome, it seems to be DK thats running dead slow tonight , I am using firefox and its the same

if you were to lie down outside your back door with your head on the step and gazing up as if plane spotting , so your head is tilted up at say 45 degrees , if you can see sky from over your back fence round to your right hand neighbours its good to go, you could even have your dish on the ground is this were the case as no height is required , its not like a freeview aerial getting over other peoples roofs or trees etc in the way

buildings and trees will block the signal from the sky , but if a plane was going over your back fence or the neighbours houses at the back of you , and you can easily see it with no blockages then your dish can see the satellites thousands of miles away

the only reason to put a dish high up the wall is to stop kids swinging from it , or to get over line of sight obstacles , its tucked out of the way to prevent accidental or deliberate damage etc

the best reason for doing it yourself is you can put it right when it inevitably goes "wrong" , like with the recent bad weather we had , most of us had to go out and tweak our dishes and motors etc

No need to raise the dish as mentioned, I can work on mine from ground level, if you just rest the app I told you to download on you lnb arm and follow the instructions in the picture ive posted up it will get you within a few degree,

Another problem with the pole your using if it was level when you fitted it it wont be when you put the motor and dish on it, I get 0.8 to about here but just put your phone on the arm and you wont be far away.

Also take a look here and put your postcode in drag the balloon to were your dish is and select 0,8w from the sat positions.

DIY and professional tools to point your satellite dish. Get accurate information for your location with our online satellite finder so that you can get the job done and watch satellite tv in no time.

Hi Pity you dont live in London as i could have sorted it out for you in about 20 minutes. Have you tried to tilt the dish slightly up and also check LNB is set correctly.??? Also try to manually find a satellite by moving dish up/down and left/right slowly until you get a picture. The other satellites should come in with a little tweaking of dish angles or LNB skew. Make sure your dish size is big enough for the sats you are looking for. Good luck and dont give up..

hehe at what point do i pass this up as a bad job? iv still got no signal, i have continuinity in the wires as iv used a barrel connection to test them, iv got it pointing at thor accoring to these phone sat detectors, iv even had it pointing in the direction of astra and still nothing. and now my mate cant help and there isnt any professionals round here that do them , does the very top of the motor have to be at the very top of the pole or just inline?

your original picture seems fine to me

the motor can go anywhere on the L pole but if you loosen it then it will "walk" down the bracket if its higher up, so near the elbow is fine

the dish mount to motor spigot also looked ok to me

the last picture posted by martin-f shows the rough direction for thor compared to your sly dish (sly points at 28e)

looking from the side , the dish face should be roughly perpendicular for thor, or for 5w for that matter

your motor zero pointer should be pointed about 3w for your longitude so thor is east of your due south
